Marketing Thoughts That Makes Business Sense #3 – Make the products you’re marketing
I hope that you had a terrific weekend. I spent a lot of time thinking about the change that's happening in technology and the way we conduct our businesses. Like you, I have been bombarded with alarming messages about the frightening future of the Internet, and how it's going to wipe out people who don't take their predictions seriously — and of course ultimately buy into their products — to ease the pain…. They say that email marketing is out, yet I see them sending several emails a day to promote the gloom and doom. Agreed, open rates for emails are at it's all time low. That's because the messages that we marketers send out are jaded and full of hype and unbelievable promises. As a result, regulations have kicked in to control the junk and refine what's good… Don't get me wrong… There is nothing wrong with the CORE MESSAGE of CHANGE. When we strip the hype and distractions away, the core message is actually about positive change. Change that has been happening since the beginning of commerce. Let's talk about this. When you think about it, It's downright transparency in business. Yes, online businesses have to be more transparent with their dealings to their marketplace. I think that's a good thing and we must be excited about a change like this. Not scared or frightened — but optimistic. And finally….. (Or at least use them before you try to sell them) Wow!…. "Create the product you are marketing"? If you are an affiliate marketer, you are probably thinking that it's too hard to create your own product. Truth is anyone can create their own product. The bad part about being an affiliate marketer is that it doesn't promote real customer loyalty. How can there be customer loyalty when all we look for are new sales all the time? When you are an affiliate marketer, you tend to look for commission sales. It's no different from a tough offline sales job, really. You sell or refer a few people, then move on to looking for the next customer. There is no loyalty to that type of selling. That type of selling does not keep you in business long term. Relationship building becomes relevant to you only when you have customers who can buy from you over and over again. Let's embrace the change and believe that there are more opportunities in the future than it ever was in the past.
